Birmingham Dental Hospital

Medical Monitor Arms | Healthcare | UK

The Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry opened its doors in March of 2016 and was the first purpose built facility of this type constructed in the UK for nearly 40 years. The 4 storey building has been equipped to treat up to 120,000 patients every year and offers world class teaching facilities for more than 600 students.

ErgoMounts were contacted in November 2013 just as the project had started construction. Our task was to assist the Birmingham Community Healthcare (BCH) project team with finding ergonomic, medical grade mounting solutions for all clinical areas in the new development. After the initial consultation stage we were able to set up a number of mounting arms within a mock-up of a typical surgery bay at the old dental school in St Chad’s Queensway, Birmingham City Centre. A number of areas presented particular problems where vital air vents or cabinetry would prevent a standard mounting arm being used. In these cases our design departments in the UK and USA worked closely with the project team to design, test and build custom mounting arms to fit these unique area requirements. One such area was an under desk requirement for a keyboard which had a large air vent preventing any form of mounting plate to be fixed to the wall. Our team presented a variation on the T2 arm which enabled the keyboard to be mounted in an elevated position whilst avoiding the vent and clearing the required 35” distance.

In January 2015 a total of nearly 600 ErgoMounts AV Arms were rolled out and delivered to site within the required project timeline and were installed over a 3 month period. In December of that year Queen Elizabeth II visited the hospital for its official opening and was said to be very impressed with the state of the art teaching bays.

4 Months later on the 31st of March 2016 the hospital finally opened its doors to patients and in its first year earnt itself an impressive 4 star rating with the NHS Choices website.

Since then ErgoMounts have also been working on a new project with BCH to provide the Dental Outreach Centres with a new ergonomic computer mounting solution to ensure clinicians can work in a comfortable environment whilst having seamless access to IT systems at the point of care.
